Sometimes when you need to make a brochure quickly, or the budget you have simply won’t accommodate a professional graphic designer, it might be a good idea just to go ahead and try making your own brochure. It may sound impossible, or you may be worried that you don’t even know where to start, but if you have a copy of Microsoft Word and an idea of what your content needs to be like, there’s no reason you can’t design a decent brochure for your event or business, or anything else you need to advertise. In fact, so many people already have Microsoft Word on their computers, that you can pretty much start on your brochure as soon as you’re ready, and you’ll probably find that it’s not as difficult as you thought.

You will need to do some planning and design word to make a brochure in Microsoft Word, but don’t panic if you don’t have any design experience, because there are plenty of ways to get help with this. The first thing you need to decide on is what sort of layout you want your brochure to be. Many people prefer something like a tri-fold brochure, and this can work well for a variety of situations. The tricky part is setting up your page columns and margins in Microsoft Word, so that your brochure looks right when it’s printed, and folds in the correct places. You can set this up yourself by putting your column settings on “3 columns” and turning your page setup to “landscape.” If you find it’s not going well, or you don’t understand why you still can’t get your layout looking how you want it, there are plenty of places online where you can find free brochure templates that have the margins and page setup done for you already. In those cases, you have slightly less control over the layout, but if you just need a basic tri-fold, then using a pre-fabricated template for your Microsoft Word brochure should be just fine.

Once you have the layout of your brochure taken care of, the content is ready to be inserted. This is where a lot of people either have trouble thinking of what should go in the their brochure, or they have the opposite problem and want to stick too many things in. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas, resist the temptation to fill up the brochure with useless graphics or ridiculous fonts. Instead, spend your effort thinking about what your potential audience needs to know. If you could only tell the public one piece of information about your company or event, what would it be? What about the second most important piece? Prioritize your message, and that way your Microsoft Word brochure will be full of useful content that will keep your audience interested.
